Coltrane Church Launches Jazz Education and Youth Empowerment Program With Ascension Day Tribute to John Coltrane and Lady Day featuring Elé Howell Quartet, Ann Mack, and Surprise Guests

On Friday July 15, the community is invited to the sanctuary of St. Cyprian's Church to share an evening of the music of John Coltrane and Billie Holiday, a commemoration of the living proof and power of their music, decades after they first composed and performed it.

Featuring the Elé Howell Quartet, singer Ann Mack, and other special guests, the Ascension Day tribute to Coltrane and Holiday is a benefit for the church and its developing affordable jazz and youth education program.

"Our focus on the youth is to inform and educate them on the history of their forefathers who are the creators of the music tied to their struggle for freedom, dignity, justice, and equality," says Archbishop Franzo King.  "To have them seize ownership of their heritage and become a contributing part of the life of this music as performers, composers, and producers, and reap the advantages as 'Dear Listeners,' in a quest 'to live richer fuller and more productive lives.'"

John Coltrane and Billie Holiday both ascended on July 17th. With eight years between their deaths, their music remains vibrate, relevant, and meaningful. You the "Dear Listener" are invited to an evening of extraordinary music with, the dynamic and upcoming drummer Ele' Howell. Before leaving for the East Coast to continue his music studies, Elé wishes to perform his tribute as a benefit for the Coltrane Church where his father, Richard Howell, a world renowned saxophonist is also a frequent guest improvisor.  Supporting Howell on the bill is Ann Mack, a seasoned California-based jazz song stylist. This will be an inspirational and electric combination that you don't want to miss!

Show is at 7 PM (doors open at 6 PM) and advance tickets for the event are available for $15 at Brown Paper Tickets and at local independent bookstores Alley Cat, Adobe, Modern Times, Dog Eared and Bird and Beckett. No youth will be turned away.

St. Cyprian's Church is located at 2097 Turk Street (at Lyon) in San Francisco.
