The New Story of Work: Politics, Spirituality and Labor – April 15-16, 2016
Co-Sponsored by Pacific School of Religion, UC Berkeley Labor Center and Ignite Institute at PSR

Americans work more than anyone in the industrialized world, take less vacation, work longer days, and retire later.  Major shifts in technology, globalization, and ideologies have reframed our understanding of work.  And yet, families are making less, and the gap between rich and poor continues to grow. So, what’s the story?  What are the narratives that shape and challenge our understanding and experience of work and its purpose and meaning?

The New Story of Work will bring together organizers, faith and business leaders, activists, and scholars, to explore and strategize around the meaning of work and the significance of labor today. This convening invites academic analysis and spiritual practice to ignite networks and build alliances for stronger political engagement in a presidential election year.

The conference launches on Friday, April 15 with the 2016 Earl Lecture with Annie Leonard, sustainability proponent and creator of the animated film The Story of Stuff (2007), which describes the life cycle of material goods. In 2014, she became the Executive Director of Greenpeace USA.

On Saturday, engage with scholars, organizers, business and faith leaders on key questions of migration, economics, and labor through storytelling, brainstorming, sharing best practices, and envisioning together a new – fresh, compelling, just – story of work.

In addition to Annie Leonard, speakers include:

  • Organizer and Author Saru Jayaraman, Co-Founder of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United
  • Author David Korten, Co-Founder of YES! Magazine
  • Labor Leader Bob King
  • Entrepreneur Konda Mason, Co-Director/CEO of HUB Oakland
  • Theologian Joerg Rieger
  • Rev. David Vasquez Levy, PSR President
