Church Volunteers Tackle North Beach Trash Problem

Volunteers for the Church of Scientology have dedicated themselves to cleaning up a persistent trash problem in their North Beach neighborhood. Over the past two months they have conducted neighborhood cleanups every other weekend in cooperation with the Department of Public Works which provides the trash bags and tools.

“It’s really gross times a trillion,” said Milo, one of the younger volunteers, who has spent weekend hours trying to keep Gibb alley, off of Columbus Avenue, free of trash.  “We come again and again and clean it up and then it just gets trashed again. At least we’re setting a good example.”

The Way to Happiness Neighborhood Cleanup Campaign is hoping to inspire others to volunteer and take responsibility for the community as well.

Jevon Millan, the Executive Director of the Church, said “We’d love to have more volunteers.  It looks like a daunting task when you first see what a mess some of these streets are.  But once you just decide to handle it, and start picking it up, it goes very fast.  Before you know it, the whole place is trash free.”

To encourage more neighbors to participate, the Church is hosting an awards event to acknowledge those who have participated to date and raise awareness on the problem. The event will take place Saturday, June 19th at 2 PM at 701 Montgomery Street. All are invited.
